Crypto Market Rises as Soft US Inflation Boosts Rate Cut Hopes

Even though three FOMC members voted in favour of raising the federal funds rate, cryptocurrency markets are steadily rising overnight. A softer-than-expected core PCE reading, an unexpected decline in second quarter GDP growth, along with an overnight decline in global crude oil prices, contributed to shifting the crypto market’s focus from inflation concerns to a sense of euphoria in the tech sector. The Federal Reserve, on Wednesday, upheld the target range for the federal funds rate at 3.5 to 3.75 percent, in line with expectations. However, three members of the FOMC cast their votes in favour of a hike, which intensified concerns regarding a forthcoming increase in rates. However, data for June released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis on Thursday morning indicated that the core PCE price index experienced an increase of 0.1 percent. Markets had anticipated that the Federal Reserve’s favoured measure of core inflation in the U.S. economy would increase by 0.2 percent. The softer-than-expected inflation print contributed to a moderation in global market expectations regarding a rate hike in September.
