Crypto Market Edges Higher as Fed Hike Bets Fade

Major cryptocurrencies are exhibiting a mixed performance on Tuesday morning, leading to a slight increase in the overall crypto market capitalisation above the flatline. An easing in bond yields, the dollar’s retreat, a reduced likelihood of an October rate hike by the Fed, along with positive catalysts on the regulatory front, contributed to an improvement in sentiment toward digital assets. However, anxiety ahead of the release of FOMC minutes on Wednesday, along with outflows from U.S.-listed crypto spot ETF products, weighed on market sentiment. Sovereign bond yields declined across various maturities and geographical areas. Ten-year U.S. treasuries are presently yielding 5.268 percent, reflecting a decrease of 0.85 percent from the prior close. Yields on long-dated 30-year U.S. treasuries experienced a decline of 0.64 percent. Ten-year bond yields have decreased notably in Germany, France, the U.K., Spain, Italy, and Australia. The six-currency Dollar Index, which assesses the strength of the U.S. dollar against a basket of six currencies, is presently at 102.02, reflecting a decrease of 0.14 percent from the previous close of 102.17.

Expectations for a quarter percentage rate hike by the Federal Reserve in October have decreased to 21.6 percent, down from 22.1 percent the previous day and 50.9 percent a week prior. Sentiment in crypto markets was further enhanced by the recent regulatory measure in the U.S. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission on Monday requested public feedback on proposed rulemaking concerning the regulation of crypto asset transactions and markets for crypto assets. The agency’s Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking aims to integrate crypto asset transactions into its uniform national market regulatory framework, thereby enhancing clarity, certainty, and consumer protections within the crypto asset markets. The notice seeks input on how the CFTC can effectively curb abusive practices in crypto asset markets and retail commodity transactions involving crypto assets within a standardised national framework. The 60-day public comment window aims to gather perspectives on offering market participants crypto asset-specific contextual information regarding best practices for compliance with regulatory requirements. The public may also provide input on how the Commission can formalise through rulemaking a subcategory of designated contract market registration, referred to as a crypto asset market, which is specifically designed for retail commodity transactions involving crypto assets.

The cryptocurrency markets responded positively to the backing from institutional investors, reflecting a growing confidence in the sector.
