Bitcoin Dips Under $80K as Fed’s Hawkish Stance Weighs on Crypto

Major cryptocurrencies are experiencing declines in overnight trading as markets respond to the dissent expressed by two FOMC members regarding support for a quarter percentage hike. Recent concerns regarding the AI trade, coupled with lacklustre earnings reports from several major technology firms and an increase in PCE inflation, have contributed to heightened volatility in the cryptocurrency markets. Overall cryptocurrency market capitalisation experienced a decline of nearly half a percent, while Bitcoin fluctuated within a range of $81,703 to $79,607 over the past 24 hours. The cryptocurrency markets have processed the Federal Reserve’s decision to keep the target range for the federal funds rate steady at 3.75 to 4 percent. However, the hawkish tone in the Federal Open Market Committee’s statement and the lack of a unanimous decision to maintain rates exerted pressure on crypto market sentiment. The committee recognised that inflation continued to be high and that economic activity was growing robustly. The committee noted that, despite the significant uncertainty stemming in part from geopolitical developments, domestic spending has demonstrated resilience.

The committee also placed on record its reading of the economy, highlighting the strong productivity growth, the robust capital investment, the job gains that have kept pace with the workforce as well as the unemployment rate that has changed little. The FOMC affirmed its commitment to price stability while indicating that additional information is necessary to ascertain the appropriate policy stance for achieving a prompt return of inflation to the Committee’s 2 percent target. Sentiment deteriorated further as the Fed’s favoured inflation measure underscored concerns regarding the persistent price pressures within the economy. Data released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis on Thursday morning indicated that the year-on-year PCE Price Index increased as anticipated, rising to 3.6 percent from 3.4 percent in August. The core component thereof increased as anticipated to 3.1 percent from 3 percent in the preceding month. The month-on-month PCE price index increased as anticipated to 0.5 percent from 0.3 percent in August. The core component thereof recorded 0.3 percent, aligning with forecasts.

The hawkish repricing in Federal Reserve rate hike expectations has negatively impacted sentiment within the cryptocurrency market.
