Bitcoin Slides to $75,500 as Weekend Crypto Selloff Intensifies

Bitcoin’s price experienced a sudden decline to $75,500 following its inability to sustain levels above $77,000 over the weekend. Most altcoins have mirrored this trend, particularly the largest ones, which exhibited significantly stronger performance on Friday and Saturday. This volatility, atypical for the weekend, emerged alongside reports that one of the leading market makers, Wintermute, had taken short positions on several fronts. Initially, Onchain Lens observed that the company transferred nearly $60 million in BTC and SOL to Binance and Coinbase, presumably with the intention of selling.

Furthermore, the analytics resource indicated that Wintermute has established a substantial futures position on Hyperliquid. Current on-chain data indicates that the company maintains a long position valued at $13.85 million; however, the predominant portion of this leveraged trade is orientated toward shorting the market, amounting to $146.19 million. Bitcoin’s price, having experienced one of its most remarkable weeks in years, surged from $64,000 to nearly $80,000 in under 48 hours, subsequently reacted with a decline on Sunday morning.

The asset had stabilised at over $77,000 but declined by more than $1,500 to $75,500. It found some support there and currently sits above $76,000; however, it remains 2% down on the day. Numerous altcoins have experienced significantly greater declines. ETH has experienced a decline of 5%, falling to a level below $2,400, while XRP has decreased by 6.5%. Ripple’s token encountered resistance at $1.70 on Friday evening and Saturday morning, subsequently retreating to levels below $1.50.

Data indicates that nearly $100 million in logs were destroyed in the last hour, with both BTC and ETH maintaining an equal share of approximately $41.5 million each. On a daily basis, total liquidations exceed $350 million, impacting over 90,000 traders, a significant figure for a weekend. This Sunday correction followed several signals indicating that bitcoin is poised for a pullback after a rapid increase of $15,000 within a matter of days.
