Trump Pushes Clarity Act and Hints at More Bitcoin Buying

U.S. President Donald Trump called on lawmakers to advance the Clarity Act on Wednesday, while also suggesting the possibility of increased government acquisition of bitcoin. Following a meeting with cryptocurrency executives at the White House, President Trump stated that the successful passage of the Clarity Act would ensure the United States maintains its competitive edge over China. Lawmakers anticipated a vote on the crypto market structure bill, known as the Clarity Act, in August. A vote will now proceed in September. The bill will create a framework for differentiating between digital assets categorised as securities, commodities, or payment stablecoins.

“We’re ensuring that America remains the undisputed leader in not only Bitcoin and crypto, but also technologies like prediction markets, artificial intelligence and much more,” President Trump said. He added: “Now we need Congress to take the next step by passing the Clarity Act — a fair version of the Clarity Act — and this landmark structure legislation. It’s a very, very powerful structured legislation which will keep us ahead of China, and keep us ahead of everyone else.” In response to enquiries regarding the potential accumulation of bitcoin by the U.S. government, President Trump remarked: “It’s been talked about — it’s taken a lot of pressure off the dollar, it’s been very, very good for the dollar, and I think if [regulators] came in with recommendations, I would certainly listen.”

Last year, President Trump enacted an executive order aimed at the creation of a strategic reserve for bitcoin. The order stipulates that the U.S. is prohibited from selling any of its bitcoin holdings, the majority of which have been confiscated during law enforcement operations. However, the executive order does not obligate the purchase of the asset. Nevertheless, the president has recently expressed a favourable view of bitcoin: Just last week, Trump stated in an interview with Punchbowl News that “you see people paying with bitcoin and they don’t even know about cash anymore.”

Despite its passage in the House of Representatives last year, the Clarity Act has remained in a state of deadlock for the majority of this year, following a confrontation between the banking lobby and lawmakers, as well as crypto businesses, regarding the permissibility of platforms such as Coinbase paying customers yield. Some lawmakers have attempted to modify the language in the bill pertaining to ethics. A new bill began to circulate in July, prohibiting government officials from endorsing and profiting from cryptocurrency. Other lawmakers indicated that it still fell short, while several pro-crypto Republicans accused Democrats of intentionally engaging in political manoeuvring and postponing the bill.
