Bitcoin Reaches Five-Week High Despite Middle East Tensions

Anticipation of positive regulatory changes in the United States has boosted sentiment in the cryptocurrency markets, driving Bitcoin to reach a five-week high of $66,910. Overall cryptocurrency market capitalisation saw an increase of nearly 3 percent overnight as markets responded positively to the potential passage of the Clarity Act in the U.S., following reports that President Trump had agreed to a significant ethics provision. Continuous inflows to Bitcoin Spot ETF products listed in the U.S. have further enhanced sentiment. The CLARITY Act, also known as the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act of 2025, clearly defines the federal regulator tasked with overseeing each part of the U.S. digital asset market. The legislation has faced setbacks due to a dispute over an ethics clause that is part of it. The regulatory bill aims to clarify the roles of the SEC and CFTC, protect developers, and establish rules for stablecoins. The overwhelmingly positive mood in the cryptocurrency market, however, coincides with a deteriorating geopolitical situation in the Middle East, characterised by ongoing attacks, disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, and a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia declared by the Houthis. With no clear signs of easing tensions, crude oil prices have risen sharply, bond yields have gone up, and the Dollar Index has strengthened. Nevertheless, futures on Wall Street are showing positive movement, while Gold has risen by more than one percent.

The change in market sentiment was also evident in the CMC Crypto Fear and Greed Index. The gauge that tracks sentiment in the crypto market has risen to 40 (neutral) from 37 (fear) the day before, 34 (fear) a week ago, and 21 (fear) a month earlier. Liquidation statistics indicate a significant shift in the market dynamics. Liquidations have reached a total of $250 million in the past 24 hours. Short positions liquidated reached a total of $194 million, while long positions that were liquidated amounted to just $56 million. The total value of the cryptocurrency market has risen by 2.8 percent in the past 24 hours, now standing at $2.26 trillion. More than 65 of the top 100 cryptocurrencies are seeing overnight increases of over one percent, while around 7 are encountering overnight declines of one percent or more. The total cryptocurrency market capitalisation saw a notable increase, which was accompanied by a 24-percent rise in trading volumes.
